Vol. 5 No. 1 (2014): Africanities
More than 126 years have passed since the official end of slavery in Brazil, with the signing of the Golden Law,
by Princess Isabel, on May 13, 1888, we still feel, today, the reflexes of having been the
last country in the Americas to give up forced labor, in which some people in society held property rights over others. Even with the visible marks left by slavery and the
phenomena related to it in the formation of Brazilian society, many people and researchers from
Humanities write their writings as if slavery never existed in Brazil. Inside the
need to expand or not to hide the past that touches us, is that this Dossier - “Slavery and its vestiges” - was organized.
