BY THE WAVES OF THE SEA: THE RESCUE OF THE HISTORICAL DOCUMENTATION OF THE CALÇADÃO DE COPACABANA (1905-1970)
Abstract
The Copacabana Boardwalk is a great wide tour that borders the beach between the neighborhoods of Copacabana and Leme of the City of Rio de Janeiro. It is an icon, a postcard for the country. However, despite its relevance as a representation and landscape heritage, studies on its cultural and historical significance are scarce. The purpose of this article is to interpret the meanings of the historical cultural process of construction of the Copacabana Boardwalk. To this end, the time frame from 1905 to 1970 was covered and the analysis was based on the foundations of Stuart Hall. It was found that the process went through five phases, between the construction and the reform that constituted its current language, where the sigh of the first sidewalk is representative of the period of modernity, and the sigh of second and third mark the entrance of the city in post-modernity.
